Friends in Music is an after-school music mentoring program that reaches middle school orchestra students in two Title I schools in Fayette County, KY.
The weekly program consists of two components for each participant:
an after-school small-group music lesson led by mentors from the most advanced CKYO orchestras; and
private instrument lessons by a professional music educator. Students who qualify for the free or reduced lunch program through the Fayette County Public Schools are offered lesson scholarships.
Through the comprehensive and intense nature of the program as well as the dedication of the mentors and staff, Friends in Music provides a high-quality musical experience for underserved youth and helps these students develop the interpersonal, professional, and leadership skills to better serve their school and civic communities.
Friends in Music meets Tuesdays at BSMS and Wednesdays at Leestown from 4:00-5:15 each week. Our regular after school meeting consists of:
Snacks and Fun Activity with Mentors
Small Group or Private Lessons with Mentors
Private lessons are then scheduled with each interested FIM student and offered at a time and cost accessible for each family.
