Concerto Competition
Concerto Rules and Guidelines
Concerto Competition Audition Times
Eligibility:
- All
CKYO students in good standing (i.e., all forms, signatures, tuition turned
in) are eligible to participate provided that they were members the previous
year and they were not winners of the competition the previous year.
- The
application fee, two copies of the solo part for the piece the student plans
to perform, and the application form must be received by CKYO in advance of
the deadline in order for a student to participate.
- Small-group
(double- and triple-concerti, for example) pieces are acceptable.
- Each
student is allowed only one entry per year, even if that entry is a
small-group piece.
- The student must be available to perform on November 16th, March 15th, and May 10th; winners will be assigned performance dates based on
what is best for the orchestras’ season program, not the winners’
schedules. If a winner is
unavailable on the date he or she is assigned, CKYO may choose to have the
Alternate perform in his or her place.
- A
student may audition on a different instrument instead of the one he/she
plays in CKYO (e.g., a CKYO violinist may audition to play a piano concerto)
Format:
- The
competition date will be Monday evening, September 29; all
applicants must perform that evening in order to be eligible; there will be
no make-ups or videotaped auditions.
- All
students must play with piano accompaniment.
- The
student and pianist will perform their piece in its entirety, including any
long “orchestral” passages.
- Performances
will be in random order. If a
student is unavailable at a particular time, he or she must so indicate on
his or her application. Every
effort will be made to accommodate these needs, but not all needs can be
accommodated.
- The
judges will make written comments and at the end of the evening will decide
the winners. The CKYO music director will not write comments or
participate in selection of the winners.
- The
judges’ decision will be based not on the difficulty of the pieces or on
how advanced the performers may be; the decision will be based solely on the
quality of the performances that evening.
- The
top two competitors as determined by the judges will perform solo with the
Symphony Orchestra during the upcoming concert season.
- The
judges will then choose one winner to perform solo with the Concert
Orchestra during the upcoming concert season; this will be the best-placed
person whose piece meets the following criteria:
- The
piece must be less than 10 minutes in length
- The
piece must have been approved in advance by the CKYO music director as
being appropriate for Concert Orchestra (these pieces will, with few
exceptions, be baroque and classical pieces).
- The
results will be posted on the CKYO website.
Choosing a piece:
- The
piece must be less than 12 minutes in length.
If the piece is close to 12 minutes in length but exceeds the time
limits slightly due to variations in performance, the student must contact
the CKYO music director in advance for approval.
- Any
piece for soloist and orchestra is acceptable (i.e., not just concerti).
- A
student may play more than one movement from the same work provided
the total playing time does not exceed 12 minutes.
- The
piece must be in print or readily available to rent or borrow.
- Note—if
a student wishes merely to use the competition as an opportunity to receive
excellent feedback from very well-qualified judges, then he or she may play
any piece that adheres to the above guidelines.
If the student wishes to have the best chance to win, he or she must
choose a piece that showcases his or her unique talents—one that is
challenging but does not overwhelm the student technically.
Miscellaneous
- No
audio- or video-taping of the competition will be permitted.
- CKYO
reserves the right to alter or amend these rules at any time up to the start
of the competition.
